CONFLICT RESOLUTION: MEDIATION, MENTORING & COACHING

For when families face loss and legacy

Coaching for Business Growth & Change

When tensions rise - whether over succession, roles or strategy - conflicts can threaten both the business and the family bond.

Together we can move difficult conversations towards productive decisions. And preserve what matters most.

The delicate balance of legacy, leadership and relationships.

Why the meerkats? In the photo, four meerkats look ahead - alert, aligned and focused. But two are locked in conflict. They will distract all in achieving the business goals for the future.

Family businesses are the backbone of our economy. Far more nuanced than a corporate enterprise, they blend emotional ties with financial interests, legacy with leadership and tradition with innovation.

They rely on a family getting along and seeing eye-to-eye on the business strategies for the future.

Whether a dispute is brewing, or you just want to prevent future issues, my coaching is designed to support both the business and the family behind it.

What causes conflict in family businesses?

Conflict in family business is rarely about one issue. it's often about a web of unspoken expectations, unresolved history and unclear roles.

Common triggers for conflict include:

  • Succession planning: Who will take over, and when?
  • Role confusion: Are responsibilities clearly defined?
  • Perceived unfairness: Discontent and inbalance about contributions and rewards?
  • Generational differences: Are values, work styles, and visions aligned?
  • Communication breakdowns: Are difficult conversations avoided or mishandled?
  • Inheritance and ownership: Are plans for asset distribution clear and agreed upon?

Unexpected traumatic change to your family business.

No matter how well a family business is run, life can throw curveballs that shake its foundations. A sudden illness, the death of a founder, a divorce, or an unexpected departure can create a crisis of leadership, identity, and direction.

These moments are not just operational challenges—they’re emotional earthquakes. In the wake of traumatic change, families often find themselves:

  • Struggling to make urgent decisions while grieving or in shock
  • Facing uncertainty about roles, ownership, or succession
  • Dealing with unspoken fears, guilt, or blame
  • Navigating power shifts or leadership vacuums
  • Trying to protect the business while holding the family together

These situations are incredibly delicate. Emotions run high, and the stakes are deeply personal. This is where neutral support can help put the business needs back on track.

How mediation can help a family business in conflict

Business conflict mediation is a structured, confidential process that helps families:

  • Surface and address underlying tensions in a safe, neutral space
  • Clarify expectations, roles, and responsibilities
  • Develop shared goals and agreements that are practical and sustainable
  • Preserve relationships while making tough decisions
  • Avoid costly legal disputes or business disruption

Unlike legal or financial advisors, I focus on the human dynamics—the emotions, assumptions, and communication patterns that often drive conflict.

I aim to bring a calm, impartial presence to help families move from gridlock to growth.

My approach

Every family business is different, and so is every conflict. My approach is:

  • Tailored: I take time to understand your unique family dynamics, history, and goals
  • Neutral: I don’t take sides. I help everyone feel heard and respected
  • Future-focused: I help you move forward with clarity, and a greater understanding of each other's needs and values.
  • Confidential: Everything shared in mediation (or coaching) stays private

I draw on my experience as a consultant solicitor dealing with family conflict, my mentoring experience as a business mentor and my experience of running my own business for some twenty years.

If coaching suits the family better than mediation

Sometimes, conflict isn’t about a single issue but an overall maliase in how the key individuals are communicating, leading or responding to challenges.

This is when coaching might be a better solution. I help business owners and key players on a one-on-one coaching session to explore how you can better collaborate, trust and agree strategy across the business.

I aim to help you:

  • Build emotional intelligence and resilience
  • Improve communication and listening skills
  • Navigate difficult conversations with confidence
  • Clarify their role and purpose within the business
  • Develop leadership capacity for the next generation

The value of Addressing Conflict Early

Conflict in a family business isn’t a sign of failure—it’s a sign that something important needs attention. When addressed with care and clarity, conflict becomes an opportunity for growth, alignment, and renewal.

By engaging in conflict resolution, whether by mediation or coaching, families can:

  • Strengthen relationships through honest, respectful dialogue
  • Make better decisions with shared understanding and trust
  • Retain family talent by creating a healthy, inclusive work environment
  • Protect the business from disruption, legal disputes, or leadership vacuums
  • Preserve the family legacy by resolving tensions before they escalate

Investing in conflict resolution is not just about solving problems—it’s about building a resilient, future-ready business where all feel valued and heard.

Running a Business is hard, even without conflict

This photo makes me wince. We may have won Sir Stelios' 'Entrepreneur of the Year' for our travel company, Nice Pebbles, but my husband and I were exhausted. Behind the scenes, we were running on empty.

My husband and I were juggling twelve-hour days, two toddlers under three, and a business growing faster than we could manage. Meals were skipped, clothes were borrowed, and every day felt like firefighting. And I wish I could airbrush out that necklace!

A frantic day-to-day is the reality for for most business founders. But, as I learnt, doing the do rather than devoting time to strategy and growth makes it all harder than it needs to be.
